Advising

The primary objective of academic advisement at Lincoln College is to assist students in realizing their maximum educational potential. Many aspects of academic advising are aimed at helping students determine and attain their educational and career objectives, while achieving a GPA commensurate with their abilities and developing a meaningful relationship with their advisors.

Academic advising includes all facets of academic planning including: semester course planning, adding and dropping courses, CASP reviews and action plans, midterm grade reviews, monitoring academic performance and progress, and additional attention as needed. Because of the strong commitment at Lincoln College to personal student mentoring and advisement, faculty members serve as academic advisors. The advisor’s role is primarily one of consultation and guidance; students must ultimately assume full responsibility for the course of their educational careers.

Advising Goals

  • To guide students toward a better understanding of the requirements for their program of study and degree completion.
  • To assist students in the proper utilization of the resources, systems and personnel on campus.
  • To share strategies and techniques that will increase a student’s chance for personal success and goal attainment.
  • To advocate on behalf of students’ concerns within the college.
  • To review periodic status reports and recommend a course of action.

Advising Responsibilities

Advisors are key to a student’s educational experience. They help guide students through academic decisions, personal growth and development. Advisors do more than just register students for classes; they are one of the primary reasons a student chooses to stay at Lincoln College.

Advisor Responsibilities

  • To be knowledgeable about A.A./A.S. degree and program requirements and explain this information to the student in clear and concise manner.
  • Offer advice on course selection and help students develop an academic plan that moves them toward graduation.
  • Keep regular office hours and be available for appointments.
  • Contact students regarding concerns about their attendance or grades.
  • Help students clarify goals and discuss actions necessary to meet those goals.
  • Monitor student progress and keep advising records and meeting notes.
  • Stay abreast of current advising policies, procedures and program changes.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed (i.e. Transition Services, Academic Success Center, Student Counseling, etc.)
  • Guide, encourage and support student development while preparing them for the next step in their academic journey.

Advisee Responsibilities

  • Participate in advising by preparing for advisor meetings, asking questions and sharing thoughts, concerns and ideas with the advisor.
  • Check student email account regularly, respond to advisor’s email, voicemail or text messages in a timely manner, and notify advisor if contact information changes.
  • Make and keep advising appointments, and let advisor know ahead of time if the appointment must be canceled.
  • Reflect on goals (educational and personal) and ask advisor to help develop a plan to reach those goals.
  • Attempt to learn and understand the core curriculum and requirements for intended program of study.
  • Be aware of the academic deadlines throughout the semester, and understand the consequences for missing those deadlines (drop/add deadlines, W/WF deadlines, etc.).
  • Know how to use the MyLynx system to obtain information necessary for classes (i.e. course syllabi, assignments, handouts or powerpoint slides), review grades and course attendance, and to view course schedules.
  • Be knowledgeable about policies, procedures and resources on campus, and ask questions when needed.
  • Be open and willing to consider advice from an advisor, faculty, or other mentors on campus.
